I have had this GIANT TOY LOADER for about 3 years now.. and Im becoming very proficient on the controls. So many viewers say " I would rather be inside the machine, I drive from the seat of my pants".. meaning: They can feel their inner-ear giving them balance instructions. I think that's a crock of shi* because I can operate inside and outside the machine.. and prefer outside because I have complete visibility. Besides .. being lazy is not my thing.. I don't mind walking around and giving myself plenty of viewing angles, and really rounding out my operators experience. I have severe arthritis in my spine.. and jostling about inside the machine is no longer an option these days.. Thankfully technology still let's me operate my machine!
Other viewers will see this video and immediately shout "there's another BIG DIRTY coming"!" .. but at the moment, i have no plans for this (BD was an event I put on for a few years). Not only have I lost touch with anyone who uses Fifth Scale machines (not as popular as they once were), but my crippled body no longer allows me to put on such huge events. I have Crohns disease as well.. so everything is more difficult.
BUT! I love having my race track! and Injured or not.. I want to race, Jump and have fun.. and if the track is built.. and a few hobbyists want to come and race.. then the track is READY! I just need a few more hours of grooming.. and everything should be good to go.
Unfortunately, the Water system to keep the dust down is in bad disrepair.. and needs a whole bunch of new piping to be effective again. This is not a priority for me at the moment.. as I have a lot of projects on the go.. but, If the track is ready, then I can slap in the new pipe when I get some.. and have everything fixed!
Stay tuned!
At the RCSparks Ranch, this is a full sized 2016 Caterpillar 242D Skid Steer with the Torc Robotics "RemoteTask" RC setup installed. This install allows me to have controls either in the machine, (as a usual setup), or the option of being outside the machine to operate it.
To address some questions from my last film:
1) Why didn't you go with a tracked machine?
1a) After weighing out cost, vs my applications - a wheeled skid steer meets my needs and budget. I have a lot of snow, ice, and a flat surfaces. Also, our soil has a lot of gravel in it, that like to cut rubber.
2) Can you ride inside the machine?
2a) Of course, it is a full sized skid steer, with optional robotics added
3) It looks small in the preview picture, is it a mini?
3a) Hah! It is actually a full sized skid steer, just the perspective is different. I am standing closer to the camera, at a "safe distance".
4) How much is a setup like this?
4a) Depending on your area of the world, and currency - prices will change. I am in Canada.. and I purchased my setup at "Finning", my local CAT dealer.
5) Is it Brushed, or Brushless? Gas or Electric?
5a) a 74.5 HP Diesel Engine
6) How much can this machine lift?
6a) A total of 2150lbs
7) Is is the Two Speed version?
7a) Yes, this 242D skid steer is a Two Speed. Low and High
8) Is the Quick Coupler / Change tool Hydraulic?
8a) No, the Quick Change is Electronic
9) Why would you get a robotic skid steer? Isn't it more fun to drive from inside the cab?
9a) I love operating machinery, both inside the cab or now outside! Because the Radio Control industry is one I am passionate about already - I am excited to have the ability to operate a full scale machine via remote.
The secondary reason I am interested in this technology is because I believe that to this point, no one has taken the time to explore a product like this, and the uses it may have - while recording their adventures. As I have been operating a film company that specializes in filming the Radio Control products of the world, and because I love HD equipment - I figure this is a great opportunity for us to explore what this "everyday" consumer product can do.
